Five years since the last volume, here is the return of the "Posse, Are You Ready?" rub a dub series with a brand new Vol. V! The previous four volumes have been received very well at the time with well over 1000 plays on Mixcloud for most of them. Been a while, but inspiration hit recently to jump on the rub-a-dub train again and bring you this new mix of rub-a-dub niceness. Recipe is the same as for Vol. I - IV: rub-a-dub tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there. Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous 60 min. mix with some added soundsamples. Mixcloud only.

When, after a long time of not doing so, I recently checked out some modern Jamaican dancehall riddims I realized it has been 5 years since I last made a mix of modern dancehall music. I liked some of the riddims and tunes I heard and since summer is here, the vibe was right for a new mix full of summer dancehall vibes. Not one for my usual listeners that are strictly into roots reggae, but I love this. Turned out as 60 minutes of feel good, sunny, party music that *will* make you dance around. My latest and well received 2012 Roots & Culture mix 'Reggae Summer Again' was released last month and here's its follow-up inna dancehall stylee already. I (very) soon wont have much time for mixing for a while (for good reasons), so soon(er) wanted to have a mix of recent Dancehall to accompany the Roots & Culture one to move & groove to this summer (and beyond)! Summer vibes the recipe, this the result: We Love Di Vibes - 2012 Dancehall Mix - Summer Stylee.

I know most following BMC's Reggae Mixes do so for the modern roots and foundation styled mixes, but hey, I do like my fair share of dancehall vibes and enjoy making one or two mixes a year with those riddims and tunes that hit me one way or the other. And when I made 'm, I might as well share it with the interested few. This one has a high percentage of summer party vibes, feel-good style, as opposed to the 'harder' side of dancehall. This will make you move! No idea whether it contains *the* big hits or so, I'm not that 'up-to-date', I just know it sounds good to me and makes me dance. That's all there is to it.

80 minutes, no full tunes, shorter pieces mixed together in the traditional mixtape style. Whole heap of different artists and very very few sound effects, which makes this different than most dancehall mixes around. We Love Di Vibes!

Swing On - a 2011 Dancehall Mix - the sequel

After Have A Good Time (a 2011 Dancehall Mix - summer edition) from late august here is a second and final mix showcasing my choice of the most interesting dancehall from 2011. The two mixes together are a pretty good summary of what I've been rating in dancehall last year, but do realize it is just that: MY choice, MY taste and no objective selection as such. These tunes just work for me, for various reasons, and contain big hits, but also less common tunes. First about an hour of nice, ruff and / or swinging riddims after which there's a 'slow it down'-break with the Rio and Danger Luv riddims, after which we step on it again with a Popcaan & Vybz Kartel segment. The end of this mix is somewhat unusual for modern dancehall mixes and is by the true King Of The Dancehall: Yellowman, giving his opinion on the music of today. Might not be my view, but when Yellow speaks, it's worth to make it heard in my book and so an interesting end of my picks of 2011 dancehall!

As said last time, I'm not a fully up-to-date, 'only-the-latest-counts' dancehall selector, so this mix has tracks from all over the year, probably heard many times in the tons of other mixes coming out almost daily. Truth is, I don't care, as I'm just making 'm for myself as (now 2x) 80 minutes of dancehall I do rate out of all the mediocre stuff out there. And since I have the mix, I might as well share it for others into it like me: not all up-to-date, just interested in hearing a nice selection of dancehall from 2011 without a loud siren or screaming every 30 seconds. That's all there is to it, just so you know, feel free to disagree. For now: check it out and Swing On!

Note:
What those 'in the know' might notice is the absence of the many lyrical battles we had this year. This is no accident, personally got pretty tired of these 'lyrical wars' going on: Beenie vs Bounty, Iyara vs Deva Bratt , Kiprich vs Merciless, Tony Matterhorn vs Twin Of Twins, Chase Cross vs Bounty and more. I do like a good lyrical fued and used some in earlier mixes, but in 2011 it seemed the attention-seeker to use, loosing its appeal for me and so I just left 'm all out in this second 2011 mix of mine. Plenty good stuff (often better even) left and that's all that matters.

Have A Good Time - a 2011 Dancehall Mix - summer edition

Not one for my usual 'Roots & Culture' followers: IT's DANCEHALL TIME AGAIN at BMC's REGGAE BLOG! As last year also in 2011 there's a whole lot of dancehall coming out of which just a small portion is actually worthwhile in my opinion, so I decided to join together a bunch of riddims and tunes in that category of 2011 that I rate for various reasons. Sometimes the ruff energy in some riddims, sometimes the happy summer vibe, sometimes the lyrical feud between artists (and please keep it lyrical only people!) and mostly the overall danceable vibe in tunes. As I'm not a fully up-to-date, 'only-the-latest-counts' dancehall selector this mix has tracks from all over the year, probably heard many times in the tons of other mixes coming out almost daily. So why bothering making it and, for you, downloading it then? Well easy:

1) First and foremost for my own pleasure, hearing 80 minutes of dancehall that I know I rate.
2) For those that do like some dancehall, but can't be bothered looking through all those riddims and tunes coming out to hear what they like and are happy when someones else makes a selection over the year so far.
3) For those annoyed by those mixes with loud sirens, horns and samples every minute or less; very few soundeffects here, I try to let the actual music make the mix.

There's more good dancehall out there, so possibly later in the year a follow up might follow. No promises though, we'll see. For now, Have A Good Time, it's DANCEHALL time!

So Di Ting Set - BMC's overview of Dancehall in 2010 - Part I

With 2010 rapidly coming to an end, I realized I heard a lot of dancehall this year, ranging from aweful (plenty of that coming out sadly) to very good, but as someone who's not your latest hot dancehall selector I usually kinda get overflooded with all the riddims and singles released in high tempo (quality control anyone?) and loose track of what I rated and enjoyed. With that in mind I decided to, as I did in 2008, mix some of the riddims and tracks I rate together in mix-CD style to hear that 2010 dancehall I enjoy without having to skip or sit through tracks. With that I don't follow the trends of what's the hottest, latest or most hyped tracks, I just included tunes I like for various reasons (some hits, some not). There's riddims and tunes I simply highly rate but also some that might not be the best riddim-wise, but have wicked vocal flows and / or are funny tracks lyrically. I wont go into Which tune falls in which category, that you can decide for yourself. I will say that just by selecting the tunes I found that in my opinion Vybz Kartel and Mavado had the best of dancehall this year (again), Kartel mainly for his funny lyrics and great flow and vocal-lines and Mavado for overall quality over quantity. My opinion still, feel free to disagree. As you notice I also do not pick sides like Gaza, Gully, Alliance or so, just music me deal with!

The mix isn't your typical dancehall mix either. No hyped up screaming or loud sirens all over the place. There's plenty of soundsamples in here, don't get me wrong, even a siren or two, but I tried to make the music make the mix, not the effects. Has numerous 'older' tunes in dancehall standards (from all over the year) too, so probably not of interest to the up-to-date dancehall fan. Still, I'm sure there'll be others in it like me, so uploaded it anyway. Must admit there's plenty of autotune in the mix as well. I dislike the effect and find it totally unnecessary (can't sing? then don't try!), but kinda got used to it over the years since it's present in more tunes than there are tunes without it. Ah so it go, can't say I didn't warn you! :-)

BMC presents Tarrus Riley & Friends - a showcase

Ask me the question what my favourite modern reggae artist at this moment is and I wont need much time to think about an answer: Tarrus Riley. With three albums (Challenges, Parables and Contagious) and numerous singles out he has shown to be an excellent recording artist on both roots and dancehall riddims (ok, gotta admit, I'm don't rate his debut-album Challenges that high). Lyrically great and special in comparison to quite some of his colleagues (whether it's cultural or lovers themes), wicked vocal-lines and flow and great voice. He reminds me a bit of a modern version of the late great Alton Ellis. Big singer. Next to that, he also has an excellent live show, touring the world with the Black Soil band featuring Dean Fraser, one of the better backing bands out there. To show my appreciation for the man's work I made a mix, which soon became a double-episode clocking in close to 80 mins, with my favourite Tarrus tracks, sometimes in combination with one or at most two other tracks on the same riddim to keep the focus on the repertoire of mister Tarrus Riley. Mix is in the usual BMC style; no full tracks, one continuous mix with added soundsamples: promotional style!
