Posse, Are You Ready? Vol. V - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

Posse, Are You Ready? Vol. V - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

Five years since the last volume, here is the return of the "Posse, Are You Ready?" rub a dub series with a brand new Vol. V! The previous four volumes have been received very well at the time with well over 1000 plays on Mixcloud for most of them. Been a while, but inspiration hit recently to jump on the rub-a-dub train again and bring you this new mix of rub-a-dub niceness. Recipe is the same as for Vol. I - IV: rub-a-dub tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there. Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous 60 min. mix with some added soundsamples. Mixcloud only.

So, Posse, Are You Ready to jump on the rub-a-dub train with me??? Welcome to the rub-a-dub style!

Posse, Are You Ready? (Vol. IV) - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

The return of the Posse, Are You Ready? series is here! Presented the third and 'final' volume about a year and a half ago, not really feeling the motivation to continue making these kind of mixes anymore for a variety of reasons. The last couple of weeks however I played back all three volumes of Posse, Are You Ready? and loved 'm. That, in combination with some lovely new tunes in, brought back the motivation to make a Vol. IV, for my own enjoyment and the interested listeners out there. A lengthy break was needed apparentely. We'll see where it goes from here.
Recipe is the same as for Vol. I - III: rub-a-dub tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there (plus a skip in one of the tracks this time, oops, can you find it?). Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous 60 min. mix with some added soundsamples. Mixcloud only. So, Posse, Are You Ready for Vol. IV???

Posse, Are You Ready? (Vol. III) - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

Yes people, BMC Taking Over one more time! Here's the third and final volume of my short but sweet series of rub-a-dub mixes called "Posse, Are You Ready?". Got strictly positive responses on these from a number of the loyal followers of my mixes, which is much much appreciated, as always. It's a well known fact most however just take without any comments or thank you's, that's just the way things go on the net, so not complaining, just stating the obvious. I have noticed though that it is continuously less motivating for me to put the effort into making a next one again due to this (amongst others, like people offering mixes on ebay). I don't care much for how often a mix is played, but instead get most enjoyment out of comments from listeners, exactly what is lacking. Really wanted to make this third volume for "Posse, Are You Ready?" as I had the tunes already recorded and liked making it a trilogy, but for those that care, I for now honoustly don't know if there'll be more new mixes (in whatever style) from me online anymore. No sad affair or anything, noone's fault, just a feeling that I think those that have been checking my mixes out all these years deserve to know. This one will be Mixcloud only (for reasons I wont bother mentioning) and perfectly suits the summer months ahead of us, together with Vol. I and II, also still available from my Mixcloud page. If you want more, take Johnny Osbourne's advise on the last track of this mix: if you happy and you love it, rewind! :-)

Same recipe as Vol. I & II: early 80s tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there. Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous 60 min. mix with some added soundsamples. Feel good music. Enjoy!

Posse, Are You Ready? (Vol. II) - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

Late august this year I dropped my first rub-a-dub mix in a long time: "Posse, Are You Ready? Vol. I". As promised, when there would be enough interest, I'd drop a Vol. II soon. Well, here it is! Got great response to Vol. I that even went to the negative side with someone selling CD's of it on ebay (!!!, and ebay did nothing with my claims to remove it, ahhh, frustrating) and people requesting me to upload the tunes seperately for them to download (forget it, that is so not my intention with these mixes!!!!). Luckily, most response was just positivity on the vibes and the selection.

Vol. II has the exact same recipe as Vol. I: early 80s tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there. Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous 60 min. mix with some added soundsamples.

Posse, Are You Ready? (Vol. I) - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

Been over 3 years since my last mix on 70s/80s reggae, so about time to drop something new again! Here is:

      Posse, Are You Ready?

A mix focussing on what is probably my favourite era of Jamaican music: 1979 - 1985. One hour of pure rub-a-dub niceness. In this first volume (hopefully more to follow!) there's tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice. All tracks are taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there. Mix in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, one continuous mix with some added soundsamples, sources of each track given. Check it out and try not to move to this, it wont work!

Drop me a comment if you enjoy the works. If there's enough interest, I'll probably drop a Vol. II and maybe even III soon.

Toyan's How The West Was Won - In The Mix - re-upload

Again, for those that missed it back then here's another re-upload (next to my Purpleman mix) of one of my foundation mixes from 7 years ago (2007) based around a great deejay album from the golden rub-a-dub days. The album in question is ***How The West Was Won*** by (Ranking) Toyan, released in 1981 on the great Greensleeves label. It's a Henry 'Junjo' Lawes production with Soljie Hamilton & Scientist at the controls. Add to that the fabulous Roots Radics for the riddims and you have all ingredients for a wicked album from start to finish. Toyan is one of my favourite deejays of those days and this album is one of the reasons why. What I love especially is the use of riddims from a whole heap of other killer tunes from the era by artists like the Wailing Souls, Michael Prophet, Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown and Hugh Mundell. For this mix I selected the vocal companions to the tracks Toyan is toasting over on How The West Was Won and mixed them together in album order. No dub-sides were added in this mix, just the vocal and Toyan's deejay version. I have slightly updated the 2007 version on transitions and volume, but it's mostly unchanged. As with all my mixes, no full tunes are used, shorter pieces mixed together, resulting in a lifely mix of 28 minutes of early dancehall niceness. Most, if not all, of these tracks have been repressed on their albums or as singles in recent years, so if you like what you hear, the vinyl shouldn't be too hard to get hold of! All from the incredible Greensleeves catalogue. As always, I've added the source of each track below the tracklist. Go get 'm, nothing beats putting the needle on a nice shiny piece of black vinyl to listen to these tunes. Perfect vibe for these summer months, check it out if you haven't already and enjoy!

Purpleman & Friends A Go Nice Up The Area - re-upload

Since it takes me more and more time to bring new mixes these days and I've had several requests for re-uploads of some of my older ones, I figured lets start with that. First one is a mix I did 5 years ago (2009) and one I'm still very pleased with! It's focussing on the works of none other than Purpleman! Purpleman recently joined Facebook and is doing good by the looks of it, find him there. This mix was/is called Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area with Purpleman alongside singers like Don Carlos and Barry Brown on the same riddims. I've slightly updated the mix on some transitions and effects volume (lowered) and for this occassion added two additional tracks that were not in the original 2009 edition since I got the Purpleman 45 in question after making the mix at the time: Level Vibes Pumping. So worth checking even if you already heard the 2009 edition. Original artwork above and adapted write up from 2009 and updated track- and sourcelist as follows:
Purpleman is sometimes confused with Yellowman due to their looks, but also because Purpleman even released an album under the name Yellowman (Confessions, Vista, 1983). He also recorded under the name Peter Yellow, but that period isn't covered here cause I don't own those records myself. Wicked deejay, clearly different from Yellowman (which makes it easy to hear that that Confessions album certainly isn't thé Yellowman) and had most of his recordings in the early 80s. I don't own many singles by Purpleman, but I do however have a few albums by him, which are the main source for the tracks here (see credits below). His discography isn't very big, but overall quality very good. It was fun finding out how many tunes he toasts on that were voiced by Don Carlos! Already 7 in this mix alone! Also a couple of Barry Brown tunes appear, from Hitbound releases - the Show Down series. Wicked music, hope you'll enjoy and if you don't know the man I hope that you'll hear and get to know him through this mix and start appreciate the works of the one PURPLEMAN as much as I do!

MIX: Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area - A BMC Mix

Yes people, here's another special one I'm quite proud of. How often have you seen (if ever!) a mix dedicated to the works of Purpleman? Well, here is one. After having mixes focusing on the works of deejays Nicodemus (2x), Toyan, Papa Tollo and Dillinger, this time the 'other' albino deejay from the early 80s gets the bmc-treatment. Purpleman is sometimes confused with Yellowman due to their looks, but also because Purpleman even released an album under the name Yellowman (Confessions, Vista, 1983). He also recorded under the name Peter Yellow, but that period isn't covered here cause I don't own those records myself. Wicked deejay, clearly different from Yellowman (which makes it easy to see that that Confessions album certainly isn't thé Yellowman) and had most of his recordings in the early 80s. I don't own many singles by Purpleman, only one 7" on the Hitbound label. I do however have a few albums by him, which are the main source for the tracks here (see credits below). His discography isn't very big, but overall quality pretty good. It was fun finding out how many tunes he toasts on that were voiced by Don Carlos! Already 7 in this mix alone! Also a couple of Barry Brown tunes appear, from Hitbound releases - the Show Down series. Wicked music, lots to get to know. He's no big name in the scene so I hope, as happened very successfully with my earlier Papa Tollo mix, that you'll hear and get to know and appreciate a whole heap of tunes by this man: PURPLEMAN!

Another BMC Special. Drop me a comment if you rate the music and work put into it.

MIX: Musical Shot - BMC's 80s Rub-A-Dub Session

Early to mid 80s niceness again at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Quite a few not so common tracks here, mostly taken from the LPs or singles with the exception of 3 tunes that were taken from a CD-R I received years ago through the trading-scene, tunes I'm still looking for myself (#15-17 and 29). If I may say so myself, this mix is NICE! Very nice groove throughout, to be used with doors / windows open, volume up and dancing shoes on.
Recipe as usual, no full tunes, one continuous mix with soundsamples, I will not upload the seperate tracks, promotional thing this! A few of these are available as represses / reissues, so look out for those.

Enjoy, summer vibes all the way!

Picture used in the artwork is a fragment of an original Greensleeves (http://www.greensleeves.net) 12" single cover, check out the label if you haven't already, they have a wicked reissue program going!

MIX: Do The Thing - a BMC 12" special

New mix, mainly inna rub-a-dub stylee, early to mid 80s vibes, all from their vinyl sources! This time I picked some of my 12" singles to create a new mix with vocals combined with deejay and / or dub versions. As usual the tracks are custom-mixed and also if the 12" is already an extended tune, I've shortened it to a few minutes, as usual: no full tunes at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Labels of records are given with the side of the 12" I took the tune of. Not many of these (if any) are currently commercially available, so it's record fairs, ebay and more of such places to look for these. Personally I love every one of these records, hopefully you do too. Enjoy!

Also a big thank you again for the continuous support from the group of listeners that keep on coming back to my mixes and leaving comments of appreciation; that's what it's all about for me! MIX: Papa Tullo Rides The Rhythm

After having Nicodemus (2x) and Ranking Toyan in the mix with vocal companions and some dub versions, it's now time for a next deejay that was operating most actively in the same period. Centre of attention this time is PAPA TULLO, who later started calling himself Tulloch T when he did some work for amongst others Jammy$. I don't know much about this man, only that I usually enjoy his flow and style, what's most important. I don't know where he resides nowadays, but if I'm not mistaken he occassionally still voices a tune and performs, but it's not much. For now we're looking back to the period of the early 80s, in which Papa Tullo voiced plenty of tracks on known, but also lesser known riddims with lovely vocal companion tracks. Amongst others he had a number of his tunes released on 12" on the Negus Roots and Greensleeves labels. Here I've selected 14 vocal tracks, which get Tullo riding the rhythm next, sometimes followed by the version. Some of these come from vinyl copies, while other tunes are taken from CD's (official releases or CD-R's). The source of each is given below, so if you'd like to try and track a tune down you should have enough info to go by, though some of these are not easily available (while others can be found on more places than just the source given). As always, there's no full tunes here, it's shorter pieces mixed together to one continuous flow of niceness. :-) Please leave a comment when you've enjoyed the mix! Thanks.

MIX: Gregory Isaacs meets the Roots Radics

In the early 80s, reggae legend 'the cool ruler' Gregory Isaacs recorded a few albums with the superb Roots Radics as the backing band featuring great musicians like Flabba Holt, Bingy Bunny and Dwight Pickney to name just a few. In chronological order these albums were:

* The Lonely Lover (1980 - PRE)
* More Gregory (1981 - PRE)
* Night Nurse (1982 - Island)
* Out Deh (1984 - Island)

Often dealing with the subject of love and both the joy and pain of it combined with the great riddims by the Radics and the smooth vocal delivery of mr. Isaacs himself, these albums are in my humble opinion a highlight of the 30+ years carreer of Gregory Isaacs.
Here is a 30 minute mix of tunes within the broad 'love'-theme from these albums. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do!

01) Permanent Lover (More Gregory)
02) Stranger In Town (Night Nurse)
03) Star (Out Deh)
04) Night Nurse (Night Nurse)
05) Gi Me (The Lonely Lover)
06) Front Door (More Gregory)
07) Yes I Do (Out Deh)
08) Cool Down The Pace (Night Nurse)
09) Poor Millionaire (More Gregory)
10) Not The Way (Night Nurse)
11) Substitute (More Gregory)
12) Sheila (Out Deh)
13) Hush Darling (More Gregory)
14) A Few Words (The Lonely Lover)
15) My Only Lover (More Gregory)
16) Sad To Know [You're Leaving] (Night Nurse)
17) Poor Natty (The Lonely Lover)

All four albums are not so difficult to get hold of, so if you like the tunes and would like to hear 'm in full at good quality go get 'm! :-)

MIX: Toyan - How The West Was Won ~ in the mix

Here's a new foundation mix based around a great deejay album from the golden rub-a-dub days. The album in question is ***How The West Won*** by (Ranking) Toyan, released in 1981 on the great Greensleeves label. For this new mix I selected the vocal companions to the tracks Toyan is toasting over on How The West Was Won and mixed them together in album order. No dub-sides were added in this mix, just the vocal and Toyan's deejay version. As with all my mixes, no full tunes, shorter pieces mixed together, resulting in a lifely mix of 28 minutes of early dancehall niceness. The good news is that, if you want to get hold of the full tunes in good quality (and I can imagine you do), many of these tunes can be found on albums that are available again these days. I've added the source of each track and if you enjoy what you hear I'd say, treat yourself and go get 'm; there's wicked intro's and further parts of the tunes on the Toyan album and there's plenty of other wicked tunes on those other albums too! Check it out and enjoy and leave a comment if you liked the mix!

1a. Michael Prophet - Gunman (2)
1b. Toyan - How The West Was Won (1)
2a. Hugh Mundell - Jacqueline (3)
2b. Toyan - African Ting (1)
3a. Wailing Souls - Fire House Rock (4)
3b. Toyan - Big Showdown (1)
4a. Johnny Osbourne - Baccara (5)
4b. Toyan - Toyan On The Go (1)
5a. Michael Prophet - Never Leave Me Lonely (2)
5b. Toyan - Lover Man Style (1)
6a. Johnny Osbourne - Ice Cream Love (6)
6b. Toyan - Children Children (1)

MIX: Bubble Nicodemus Bubble

My second mix around the works of the late great Nicodemus, one of my favourite deejays ever. My previous Nicodemus mix with 'the little short man' toasting over riddims of Bingy Bunny and Morwells tracks (below on this page) has been very well received and since I also selected some more wicked combinations of vocal tunes from other singers with Demus toasts at the time I felt I had to get these out for you all to hear and enjoy too. Some well known, some lesser known tunes I think. Not much more to say, so the mic is for Mr. Fabulous, Nicodemus!

Tracks:
1a) Leroy Sibbles - Rock Steady Party
1b) Nicodemus

MIX: Nicodemus meets Bingy Bunny & The Morwells

Nicodemus aka 'the little short man', one of reggae's finest dancehall deejays! Wicked flow, great voice, nice lyrics and often big riddims! In mainly the early 80s he made a habit out of voicing riddims with original vocal tracks by Bingy Bunny & the Morwells. Bingy Bunny was besides vocalist for the Morwells also the rhythm guitarist for the famous Roots Radics in their golden years. The combination of Nicodemus and Bingy Bunny / Morwells always excited me and so I made a mix of Morwell / Bingy Bunny vocal tracks combined with Nicodemus' toast and in some cases the dub.
Enjoy this mix, let me know if you like it by leaving a comment! Thanks for checking out my new mix!
