MIX: Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area - A BMC Mix

Yes people, here's another special one I'm quite proud of. How often have you seen (if ever!) a mix dedicated to the works of Purpleman? Well, here is one. After having mixes focusing on the works of deejays Nicodemus (2x), Toyan, Papa Tollo and Dillinger, this time the 'other' albino deejay from the early 80s gets the bmc-treatment. Purpleman is sometimes confused with Yellowman due to their looks, but also because Purpleman even released an album under the name Yellowman (Confessions, Vista, 1983). He also recorded under the name Peter Yellow, but that period isn't covered here cause I don't own those records myself. Wicked deejay, clearly different from Yellowman (which makes it easy to see that that Confessions album certainly isn't thé Yellowman) and had most of his recordings in the early 80s. I don't own many singles by Purpleman, only one 7" on the Hitbound label. I do however have a few albums by him, which are the main source for the tracks here (see credits below). His discography isn't very big, but overall quality pretty good. It was fun finding out how many tunes he toasts on that were voiced by Don Carlos! Already 7 in this mix alone! Also a couple of Barry Brown tunes appear, from Hitbound releases - the Show Down series. Wicked music, lots to get to know. He's no big name in the scene so I hope, as happened very successfully with my earlier Papa Tollo mix, that you'll hear and get to know and appreciate a whole heap of tunes by this man: PURPLEMAN!

MIX: Musical Shot - BMC's 80s Rub-A-Dub Session

Early to mid 80s niceness again at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Quite a few not so common tracks here, mostly taken from the LPs or singles with the exception of 3 tunes that were taken from a CD-R I received years ago through the trading-scene, tunes I'm still looking for myself (#15-17 and 29). If I may say so myself, this mix is NICE! Very nice groove throughout, to be used with doors / windows open, volume up and dancing shoes on.
Recipe as usual, no full tunes, one continuous mix with soundsamples, I will not upload the seperate tracks, promotional thing this! A few of these are available as represses / reissues, so look out for those.

MIX: Do The Thing - a BMC 12" special

New mix, mainly inna rub-a-dub stylee, early to mid 80s vibes, all from their vinyl sources! This time I picked some of my 12" singles to create a new mix with vocals combined with deejay and / or dub versions. As usual the tracks are custom-mixed and also if the 12" is already an extended tune, I've shortened it to a few minutes, as usual: no full tunes at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Labels of records are given with the side of the 12" I took the tune of. Not many of these (if any) are currently commercially available, so it's record fairs, ebay and more of such places to look for these. MIX: Ruling Sound - a mid-late 80s 45s mix inna digital stylee

After the succesfull first episode of a 80s-digital-stylee-45s-mix I did over 1,5 years ago, here finally is part 2! Twice as long, just as nice! The very nice response on the first one made we want to make a next episode for some time now and I had plenty of tunes to include, just didn't get to it until now. Variety of labels, artists and productions. Check out the wicked opening series of 'sound killing' tunes, the continuing of the Modern Girl riddim from part 1 with two other cuts on it here, a Sleng Teng segment includig no less than 5 tracks on the Harry J lick of the riddim, another Jazzbo produced combination of Horace Ferguson and U-Roy tunes on Ujama, the Agony riddim of Admiral Bailey's Big Belly Man included in part 1 here with three other cuts etc. etc. Some riddims more kinda semi-digital than pure digital, but all from the period 85 - 89 and all recorded from the 45s, no mp3s here. No full tunes as usual either, shorter pieces mixed together to one continuous mix of a little over 60 minutes and believe me, IT NICE! :-) The mentioned part 1 is still available too; mix called *** Ruff & Tuff *** , scroll down to hear that one!

MIX: Ruff & Tuff - a late 80s 45s mix inna digital stylee

With the introduction of the famous Sleng Teng riddim by Jammy$ in the mid 80s a new trend was set for digital reggae. The later 80s dancehall scene was ruled by digital riddims and gave way to numerous classics and sometimes nowadays higly sought after tunes. As one of the many interesting era's in Jamaican music I wanted to make a nice mix of it and here it is. I've recorded a bunch of my 45s from the period (i.e. late 80s) and mixed them together. Not the full tunes, parts of it that give a great idea of the tune itself. This mix has both classics and rather unknown tunes with a wicked Belly Man series, some nice Courtney Melody's, Pinchers', Robert French, a young Beenie Man, White Mice and much more. I've included some pics of the labels in the picture that comes with this episode. Enjoy!

MIX: Gregory Isaacs meets the Roots Radics

In the early 80s, reggae legend 'the cool ruler' Gregory Isaacs recorded a few albums with the superb Roots Radics as the backing band featuring great musicians like Flabba Holt, Bingy Bunny and Dwight Pickney to name just a few. In chronological order these albums were:

* The Lonely Lover (1980 - PRE)
* More Gregory (1981 - PRE)
* Night Nurse (1982 - Island)
* Out Deh (1984 - Island)

Often dealing with the subject of love and both the joy and pain of it combined with the great riddims by the Radics and the smooth vocal delivery of mr. Isaacs himself, these albums are in my humble opinion a highlight of the 30+ years carreer of Gregory Isaacs.

MIX: Basement Session - A Wackie's Thing

Here's a new old-style podcast that focusses on production work of Lloyd Barnes, better known as 'Bullwackie' or simply 'Wackie'. Jamaican producer Lloyd Barnes is the founder and owner of the so called 'Wackie’s House of Music' in New York, one of the (if not the) biggest reggae label in the US. He also had his own Wackie's studio in New York and recorded many artists (both Jamaican and other nationalities) with the quite unique and recognizable Wackie's sound. The studio and label were founded in the later 70s, though Bullwackie himself has been active in the music business before that too, releasing tunes on other labels than his Wackie's. This podcast contains tunes from singles from the 70s and 80s and gives an impression of the works of this fine producer. Since a couple of years a big reissue program of Wackie's material has been going on, so there's plenty of Bullwackie productions commercially available. Check it out.

MIX: Toyan - How The West Was Won ~ in the mix

Here's a new foundation mix based around a great deejay album from the golden rub-a-dub days. The album in question is ***How The West Won*** by (Ranking) Toyan, released in 1981 on the great Greensleeves label. It's a Henry 'Junjo' Lawes production with Soljie Hamilton & Scientist at the controls. Add to that the fabulous Roots Radics for the riddims and you have all ingredients for a wicked album from start to finish. Toyan is one of my favourite deejays of those days and this album is one of the reasons why. What I love especially is the use of riddims from a whole heap of other killer tunes from the era by artists like the Wailing Souls, Michael Prophet, Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown and Hugh Mundell. For this new mix I selected the vocal companions to the tracks Toyan is toasting over on How The West Was Won and mixed them together in album order. No dub-sides were added in this mix, just the vocal and Toyan's deejay version. As with all my mixes, no full tunes, shorter pieces mixed together, resulting in a lifely mix of 28 minutes of early dancehall niceness. The good news is that, if you want to get hold of the full tunes in good quality (and I can imagine you do), many of these tunes can be found on albums that are available again these days. I've added the source of each track and if you enjoy what you hear I'd say, treat yourself and go get 'm; there's wicked intro's and further parts of the tunes on the Toyan album and there's plenty of other wicked tunes on those other albums too! MIX: Bubble Nicodemus Bubble

My second mix around the works of the late great Nicodemus, one of my favourite deejays ever. My previous Nicodemus mix with 'the little short man' toasting over riddims of Bingy Bunny and Morwells tracks (below on this page) has been very well received and since I also selected some more wicked combinations of vocal tunes from other singers with Demus toasts at the time I felt I had to get these out for you all to hear and enjoy too.
