Love Is All I Bring - Another 2013 Roots & Culture Mix

Love Is All I Bring - Another 2013 Roots & Culture Mix by BMC

After my well-received Step Out And Dance mix from early this year, I felt like making a next 2013 mix to close the year with. Lots of great music has been released this year again that many don't seem aware of, next to the usual larger pile of low-quality crap ofcourse. I hope this mix will introduce some of this lovely music to people out there, so they can check out the artists and labels further, you wont be sorry!! The so called 'revival' of more positive, conscious music by artists like Chronixx, Protoje and Kabaka Pyramid clearly made its impact this year on the reggae scene and on me same way. So no surprise to find quite a few tracks by especially Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid in this one. Besides them, a whole variety of artists and producers recorded and released very worthwhile tunes this year and this mix showcases a whole heap of different names and styles to proof that. Especially nice this year has been the increasing number of tunes that get pressed on vinyl again, love that, bought quite a bunch of 'm! Mix is in the usual BMC style: no full tunes, some but not too many sound samples, one continuous cd-length mix in the old-school mixtape tradition. If you like what you hear, go check out the full tunes in good quality to get the real deal. I just love this music, Love Is All I Bring!

Step Out And Dance - 2012/13 Roots & Culture Mix

Gimme Likkle One Drop as the man Tarrus Riley sings on the Tropical Escape riddim. Well, ok, here you go! New roots & culture mix by BMC, over 79 minutes with riddims and tracks from 2012 and 2013. Lotsa (but not only) JA productions this time and above all lotsa good music! Selection solely based on what I rate for whatever reason, not the charts! Noticable how many artists in their lyrics express their hope for a change of musical and/or lyrical content in the scene, let's see where it goes from here. Above all these are 79+ minutes that show that reggae is alive and kicking in 2013! Very nice riddims, excellent vocal deliveries from upcoming stars like Chronixx and Exco Levi to a great lovers tune by dancehall star Mavado to the always impressive Tarrus Riley and I can go on. Check out all artists and labels (in brackets in the tracklist below), there's usually more where this came from. Mix is in the usual BMC style: whole heap of different artists and styles, no full tunes, (very) few sound samples, one continuous cd-length mix in the old-school mixtape tradition. What can I say? I'm rocking to it, hope you too, so Step Out And Dance!

MIX: Dub Along - a late 70s Black Ark selection

Double episode - foundation stylee! Lee 'Scratch' Perry, a crazy genius! There's lot to say on the man and his works, but many already did so much better than I possibly could so I wont try. Check for instance David Katz' very nice book People Funny Boy on the life of Perry and his musical legacy. This lenghty mix focusses on the later period of recording in Perry's Black Ark studio, mid to late 70s, my favorite period of Perry as producer. This ofcourse does not mean that his earlier work can be ignored. On the contrary, it is great, I just prefer this a bit better. This selection draws from various sources, artists and type of riddims, though all with that 'Black Ark sound'. By no means a 'best of', but mainly a selection of both common and less common tunes that I rate highly. I could easily make a few more episodes like this, there's too many big tunes, but I wont. Let this mix take you on a trip down memory-lane, introduce you to unknown tunes or maybe a bit of both with Lee 'Scratch' Perry at the controls! As always, not full tunes, pieces blended to almost an hour of roots from the Black Ark. Details of sources are given if you'd like to track down the tracks to hear 'm sample-free, in full and in good quality. 7" tracks are mostly from CD-R copies, I wish I owned the originals of those.

* Lee Perry - Dub Along (Super Ape - Island LP)
* Gregory Isaacs - Mister Cop / Version (Micron 7")
* Jah Lion - Fat Man (Colombia Colly - Upsetter LP)
* Brent Dowe - Down Here In Babylon / Version (Upsetter 7")
* Tony Laidley - Happy Birthday Jamaica / Version (Tulsa 7")
* Earl 16 - Freedom (Heart Of The Ark 2 - Seven Leaves CD)
* Aura Lewis - Full Experience (Baffling Smoke Signal - Heartbeat CD)
* The Diamonds - Talk About It / Yama Khy / U-Roy - Yama-khy / Version (Upsetter 7" / Perries 7")
* Raphel Green & Almantado - Rasta Train (Upsetter / Trojan 12")
* Dub & Praise / Junior Ainsworth - Thanks & Praise (Build The Ark - Trojan LP)
* Preacher - Reggae Music (Heart Of The Ark - Seven Leaves CD)
* Horace Smart - Ruffer Ruff (Open The Gate - Trojan LP)
* Junior Murvin - Solomon (Police & Thieves - Mango CD)
* Leroy Sibbles - Rastafari / Combination Two - Rastafari (Heart Of The Ark - Seven Leaves CD)
* Max Romeo - Sexy Natty / Version (Upsetter / Trojan 12")
* The Shadows - Brother Noah / Version (Build The Ark - Trojan LP)
* Rupie Edwards - Three Pan One, A Murder / Version / Rise And Fall / Version (Cactus 7" / Succes 7")
* Keith Rowe - Groovy Situation / Version (Arkology - Island CD)
* Jackie Bernard - Economic Crisis (Excaliburman - Seven Leaves CD)
* Heptones - Now Generation (Party Time - Mango LP)
* Evan Jones - 4 & 20 Dreadlocks / Version (Cutting Razor - Heartbeat CD)
* Mystic Eyes - Forward With Love (Heart Of The Ark - Seven Leaves CD)
* Meditations - Running From Jamaica / Version (Wild Flower 7")
* Jolly Brothers - Conscious Man / Version (Cyprian 12")
* The Congos - Children Crying (Heart Of The Congos - Black Art LP)
* Eric Donaldson - Freedom Street / Version (Build The Ark - Trojan LP)
* Lee Perry - Disco Devil / Version / Prince Jazzbo - Croaking Lizzard (Upsetter / Trojan 12")

MIX: Ruff & Tuff - a late 80s 45s mix inna digital stylee

With the introduction of the famous Sleng Teng riddim by Jammy$ in the mid 80s a new trend was set for digital reggae. The later 80s dancehall scene was ruled by digital riddims and gave way to numerous classics and sometimes nowadays higly sought after tunes. As one of the many interesting era's in Jamaican music I wanted to make a nice mix of it and here it is. I've recorded a bunch of my 45s from the period (i.e. late 80s) and mixed them together. Not the full tunes, parts of it that give a great idea of the tune itself. This mix has both classics and rather unknown tunes with a wicked Belly Man series, some nice Courtney Melody's, Pinchers', Robert French, a young Beenie Man, White Mice and much more. I've included some pics of the labels in the picture that comes with this episode. Enjoy!

Ruff & Tuff - a late 80s 45s mix inna digital stylee

1) Firehouse Crew - Mi No In A It Version (Taurus) feat. Fuzzy Jones intro
2) Pad Anthony - Mi No In A It (Taurus)
3) Pincher - Kingston 13 (Ossie)
4) Courtney Melody - Screechie Across The Border (Stereo One)
5) Lieutenant Stitchie - Story Time (Stereo One)

7) Sluggy - 95% Black In Jail (Music Master)
8) Little Kirk - Suffer Not The Little Ones (Shocking Vibes)
9) Horace Fergeson - Sensi Addick (Prince Jazzbo Music)
10) Prince Jazzbo - Brain Food (Ujama)
11) U-Roy - Musical Addict (Ujama)
12) Admiral Bailey - Big Belly Man (Jammy$)
13) Charlie Chaplin - Long Belly Man (Juney Star)
14) Tonto Metro - Flat Belly Man (Redman International)
15) Beeny Man - A Nuh Things Run We (Shocking Vibes)
16) Pinchers - Return Of The Don (Supreme)
17) Dennis Mangaroo - Turn It On (Mystic)

If you've enjoyed the music, please let me know by leaving a comment. The postive feedback from the listeners means more to me than a big number of 'm. Just knowing you rate the effort is worth a lot. Thanks in advance! :-) More of this in the future, so keep checking back!

MIX: Never Give Up - a 70s roots selection

Here's a new mix with a rather random 70s vocal roots selection complete with their versions. Most of my mixes so far have been focussing on recent years or the 80s, so it was about time a strictly 70s mix was added to it. There's not a special theme for this one, the only restrictions I gave myself was no repetition of artist or label of the 45 and mainly tunes around the middle part of the decade (not too sure about the exact release dates though), resulting in 13 different vocal-tracks with their b-side version. As always, no full tunes, shorter pieces mixed together. Most of these track come from reissued 45s, so if you like what you hear and want the full tunes in good quality without sound effects, go get 'm! ;-)

1a) Lacksley Castell - What A Great Day (Fatman)
1b) Great Day Dub (Fatman)
2a) Delroy Wilson - Never Give Up (Clock Tower)
2b) Delroy Wilson - Version (Clock Tower)
3a) Conscious Minds - Hotter The Battle (Soul Beat)
3b) Conscious Minds - Brain Wash (Soul Beat)
4a) Brent Dowe - Righteous Works (Freedom Sounds)
4b) Version (Freedom Sounds)
5a) Rising Sun & Mudies All Stars - United We Stand (Afro)
5b) Mudies All Stars - United Version (Afro)
6a) Mighty Soul Rebels - Jah Jah Is No Gimmick (Guiding Star)
6b) The Mighty Soul Rebel Players - No Gimmick Version (Guiding Star)
7a) Heptones - Be A Man (Studio 1)
7b) Heptones & Soundemension - Be A Man Version (Studio 1)
8a) Donovan D - Don't Mock Jah (Techniques)
8b) Mock Jah Version (Techniques)
9a) Biggs - Judgement Day (Fe-Me-Time)
9b) The Caribs - Version (Fe-Me-Time)
10a) Ken Boothe - Silver Words (Observer)
10b) Silver Lotion (Observer)
11a) The Hurricanes - You Can Run (Black Art)
11b) The Upsetters - You Can Dub (Black Art)
12a) The African Brothers - Hold Tight (Impact)
12b) Randy's All Stars - Hold Tight Dub (Impact)
13a) Creole - Beware Of Your Enemies (Well Charge)
13b) Version (Well Charge)

Thanks for checking this one out and let me know when you've enjoyed the mix by leaving a comment!

MIX: Gregory Isaacs meets the Roots Radics

In the early 80s, reggae legend 'the cool ruler' Gregory Isaacs recorded a few albums with the superb Roots Radics as the backing band featuring great musicians like Flabba Holt, Bingy Bunny and Dwight Pickney to name just a few. In chronological order these albums were:

* The Lonely Lover (1980 - PRE)
* More Gregory (1981 - PRE)
* Night Nurse (1982 - Island)
* Out Deh (1984 - Island)

Often dealing with the subject of love and both the joy and pain of it combined with the great riddims by the Radics and the smooth vocal delivery of mr. Isaacs himself, these albums are in my humble opinion a highlight of the 30+ years carreer of Gregory Isaacs.
Here is a 30 minute mix of tunes within the broad 'love'-theme from these albums. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do!

01) Permanent Lover (More Gregory)
02) Stranger In Town (Night Nurse)
03) Star (Out Deh)
04) Night Nurse (Night Nurse)
05) Gi Me (The Lonely Lover)
06) Front Door (More Gregory)
07) Yes I Do (Out Deh)
08) Cool Down The Pace (Night Nurse)
09) Poor Millionaire (More Gregory)
10) Not The Way (Night Nurse)
11) Substitute (More Gregory)
12) Sheila (Out Deh)
13) Hush Darling (More Gregory)
14) A Few Words (The Lonely Lover)
15) My Only Lover (More Gregory)
16) Sad To Know [You're Leaving] (Night Nurse)
17) Poor Natty (The Lonely Lover)

All four albums are not so difficult to get hold of, so if you like the tunes and would like to hear 'm in full at good quality go get 'm! :-)

MIX: Basement Session - A Wackie's Thing

Here's a new old-style podcast that focusses on production work of Lloyd Barnes, better known as 'Bullwackie' or simply 'Wackie'. Jamaican producer Lloyd Barnes is the founder and owner of the so called 'Wackie’s House of Music' in New York, one of the (if not the) biggest reggae label in the US. He also had his own Wackie's studio in New York and recorded many artists (both Jamaican and other nationalities) with the quite unique and recognizable Wackie's sound. The studio and label were founded in the later 70s, though Bullwackie himself has been active in the music business before that too, releasing tunes on other labels than his Wackie's. This podcast contains tunes from singles from the 70s and 80s and gives an impression of the works of this fine producer. Since a couple of years a big reissue program of Wackie's material has been going on, so there's plenty of Bullwackie productions commercially available. Check it out.

MIX: Nicodemus meets Bingy Bunny & The Morwells

Nicodemus aka 'the little short man', one of reggae's finest dancehall deejays! Wicked flow, great voice, nice lyrics and often big riddims! In mainly the early 80s he made a habit out of voicing riddims with original vocal tracks by Bingy Bunny & the Morwells. Bingy Bunny was besides vocalist for the Morwells also the rhythm guitarist for the famous Roots Radics in their golden years. The combination of Nicodemus and Bingy Bunny / Morwells always excited me and so I made a mix of Morwell / Bingy Bunny vocal tracks combined with Nicodemus' toast and in some cases the dub.
Enjoy this mix, let me know if you like it by leaving a comment! Thanks for checking out my new mix!
