Brotherly Love - An Old School New Style Modern Roots Mix by BMC (2017)

About 4 years after my latest full modern roots mix and with an increasing amount of released modern roots with a traditional touch I decided to go into it again and make this type of releases the focus of a new mix. Love those sounds, that need to be heard, so here it is. 79 minutes, modern roots releases but with a more traditional sound and instrumentation. Sometimes recycled old riddims, sometimes newly played riddims. Clear influences of 60s (rocksteady), 70s (roots, instrumentals, dub) and early 80s (rub-a-dub) Jamaican music. Tunes included date from roughly the last decade, but the majority from the last 5 years. Those claiming to not like contemporary reggae, think again after hearing this! :) Old School New Style!

Posse, Are You Ready? (Vol. IV) - a 1979 - 1985 rub-a-dub mix by BMC

The return of the Posse, Are You Ready? series is here! Presented the third and 'final' volume about a year and a half ago, not really feeling the motivation to continue making these kind of mixes anymore for a variety of reasons. The last couple of weeks however I played back all three volumes of Posse, Are You Ready? and loved 'm. That, in combination with some lovely new tunes in, brought back the motivation to make a Vol. IV, for my own enjoyment and the interested listeners out there. A lengthy break was needed apparentely. We'll see where it goes from here.

Recipe is the same as for Vol. I - III: rub-a-dub tunes by a whole variety of singers and deejays and no vocalist appears twice, all tracks taken from vinyl, so expect some crackle and pop here and there (plus a skip in one of the tracks this time, oops, can you find it?). BMC spinning Tunes - Strickly Rockers - A Classic 70s Roots 45s Session

"Here comes another brand new musical disc called Rockers!" A few days ago I introduced a for me new way of recording a mix: spin tunes and record it live, straight from the line-out of my mixing panel. The first trial set was with some modern roots tunes. Enjoyed it and liked the response of listeners, so wanted to try a next, more serious thing to accompany that one: a one hour set of 70s roots 45s. Picked a heavy selection and gave it a try and this is it! Heavy and wild. Most interesting challenge was the playing of the A and B side of the same 45 and in the transition (flipping the 45) play a soundsample from a next 45. Mostly worked out quite well I think, for a first attempt, so I at least am satisfied and like to share with you. Above all, the music, it's wicked and it's ROOTS!

Yes people, BMC Taking Over one more time! Here's the third and final volume of my short but sweet series of rub-a-dub mixes called "Posse, Are You Ready?". Got strictly positive responses on these from a number of the loyal followers of my mixes, which is much much appreciated, as always. It's a well known fact most however just take without any comments or thank you's, that's just the way things go on the net, so not complaining, just stating the obvious. I have noticed though that it is continuously less motivating for me to put the effort into making a next one again due to this (amongst others, like people offering mixes on ebay). I don't care much for how often a mix is played, but instead get most enjoyment out of comments from listeners, exactly what is lacking. Really wanted to make this third volume for "Posse, Are You Ready?" as I had the tunes already recorded and liked making it a trilogy, but for those that care, I for now honoustly don't know if there'll be more new mixes (in whatever style) from me online anymore. No sad affair or anything, noone's fault, just a feeling that I think those that have been checking my mixes out all these years deserve to know. This one will be Mixcloud only (for reasons I wont bother mentioning) and perfectly suits the summer months ahead of us, together with Vol. I and II, also still available from my Mixcloud page. If you want more, take Johnny Osbourne's advise on the last track of this mix: if you happy and you love it, rewind! :-)

Jump For Joy - BMC presents Singers & Deejays - (early) roots style

Been a long time since I made a true foundation-styled mix, so really wanted to do one again. Had an idea of combining a whole bunch of (early) roots tunes with their deejay cuts by a variety of singers, groups and deejays. This is the result, well-known tunes with lesser known deejay cuts, well known deejay cuts with lesser known vocal efforts and I guess everything in between. Main selection criterium was: good music. Setlist would probably look different tomorrow, but this is what I came up with this time. Big music, in late 60s to mid 70s style (although some deejay cuts might be recorded somewhat later), enjoy the riding of the riddims!

MIX: Can't Conquer We - a UK & EU modern roots mix

Here's one for the dubheads out there! Roots from the UK and mainland EU with plenty of old-school dubs, even more BASS and overall wicked vibes. Digital style, classic roots style, heavy UK steppers style, it's all here! All mixed in the usual BMC-way: one continuous mix, no full tunes, added sound samples and source-info given so you can go and track down these tunes yourself. Variety of singers and producers, one hour of niceness. Two older tracks in here, Dixie Peach's Slaughter and the Disciples Vintage 10", late 80s tunes that fitted in just nice, so were included.

The intro and Old Time Something by Solo Banton are taken from promo-mp3's spread by Reality Shock for the Reggae Got Talent competition. A nice initiative that I took part in by contributing the first 20 minutes of this mix. No results in on that yet, postponed to unknown date, but the total mix was finished and I wanted to get it out to the people, cause I'm very pleased with this one: IT NICE! MIX: Dillinger meets the Singers inna Showcase Stylee

New episode of BMC's Reggae Mixes with yet another deejay as the central point of attention. This time a deejay with his biggest tunes in the 70s, who got a bit of a 'commercial' reputation after his Cocaine In My Brain became a big international hit. Yep, it's Dillinger we're talking about, a deejay who made plenty of big tunes in his days for various producers riding riddims voiced by various singers. This mix wont focus on the Cocaine In My Brain kinda tracks, but on the rootsy side of Dillinger with a whole lot of different singers in the mix with added instrumental and dub versions. MIX: Do The Thing - a BMC 12" special

New mix, mainly inna rub-a-dub stylee, early to mid 80s vibes, all from their vinyl sources! This time I picked some of my 12" singles to create a new mix with vocals combined with deejay and / or dub versions. As usual the tracks are custom-mixed and also if the 12" is already an extended tune, I've shortened it to a few minutes, as usual: no full tunes at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Labels of records are given with the side of the 12" I took the tune of. Not many of these (if any) are currently commercially available, so it's record fairs, ebay and more of such places to look for these. MIX: Delroy Wilson - Let There Be Love

New DOUBLE episode of BMC's Reggae Mixes with a mix based on the music of my favourite reggae singer: DELROY WILSON! I've made quite a few mixes by now, but my favourite singer was still waiting to be the focus of a mix and here it is. Often overlooked, Delroy Wilson doesn't always get the credits he deserves. Double episode, could have easily been a triple or more, so many good tunes by this man! Mix lasts a little under 80 minutes and contains many of my favourite Delroy tracks and some version and deejay cuts. Tunes are from a variety of labels, studios, producers and musicians and cover quite a big part of his career, though mostly focus on the period late 60s - late 70s. His ska recordings for Studio 1 are left out. It's interesting to hear the change in his voice over the years, I here tried to show with 4 versions of Delroy's Dancing Mood going in steps through his career. Personally I've always rated his later period with his voice more matured a bit higher than his early years, but both periods are extensively covered here. Sadly Delroy Wilson died in 1995 at the way too young age of 46 years old, but left behind a catalogue to be enjoyed forever. What a singer.

MIX: Dub Along - a late 70s Black Ark selection

Double episode - foundation stylee! Lee 'Scratch' Perry, a crazy genius! There's lot to say on the man and his works, but many already did so much better than I possibly could so I wont try. Check for instance David Katz' very nice book People Funny Boy on the life of Perry and his musical legacy. This lenghty mix focusses on the later period of recording in Perry's Black Ark studio, mid to late 70s, my favorite period of Perry as producer. This ofcourse does not mean that his earlier work can be ignored. On the contrary, it is great, I just prefer this a bit better. This selection draws from various sources, artists and type of riddims, though all with that 'Black Ark sound'. By no means a 'best of', but mainly a selection of both common and less common tunes that I rate highly. I could easily make a few more episodes like this, there's too many big tunes, but I wont. Let this mix take you on a trip down memory-lane, introduce you to unknown tunes or maybe a bit of both with Lee 'Scratch' Perry at the controls! As always, not full tunes, pieces blended to almost an hour of roots from the Black Ark. Details of sources are given if you'd like to track down the tracks to hear 'm sample-free, in full and in good quality. 7" tracks are mostly from CD-R copies, I wish I owned the originals of those.

MIX: Papa Tullo Rides The Rhythm

After having Nicodemus (2x) and Ranking Toyan in the mix with vocal companions and some dub versions, it's now time for a next deejay that was operating most actively in the same period. Centre of attention this time is PAPA TULLO, who later started calling himself Tulloch T when he did some work for amongst others Jammy$. I don't know much about this man, only that I usually enjoy his flow and style, what's most important. I don't know where he resides nowadays, but if I'm not mistaken he occassionally still voices a tune and performs, but it's not much. For now we're looking back to the period of the early 80s, in which Papa Tullo voiced plenty of tracks on known, but also lesser known riddims with lovely vocal companion tracks. Amongst others he had a number of his tunes released on 12" on the Negus Roots and Greensleeves labels. Here I've selected 14 vocal tracks, which get Tullo riding the rhythm next, sometimes followed by the version. Some of these come from vinyl copies, while other tunes are taken from CD's (official releases or CD-R's). The source of each is given below, so if you'd like to try and track a tune down you should have enough info to go by, though some of these are not easily available (while others can be found on more places than just the source given). MIX: Hard One Fe Dem - a modern UK roots style mix

BMC alongside SPRINGLINE JAMAICA To celebrate the one year anniversary of Springline Jamaica online radio (not operational anymore these days), a large celebration was held on friday april 25th 2008 with a marathon-broadcast at their radiostation with contributions from a whole heap of people, among which a mix of myself. Here is said mix up for listen for one and all, including the Springline jingles alongside my own. Mix is focused on modern reggae with a UK roots sound. Not all from the UK, but I just use that description to give a general idea of what to expect. Contains contributions from big names from the scene like Jah Warrior, Russ D (Disciples), Twilight Circus, Dougie Conscious, Barry Issac, Manila Jeepney crew, King Shiloh + Dub Creator and more. Producers and engineers that still make wicked dubs for the flipsides of the records and make sure the bass is in full affect in their productions. Those I've been in contact with are very nice people too who deserve all support. The sounds in the mix, as usual, are shorter pieces of the tunes mixed together to a 45 minutes showcase of modern roots and dub. Most, if not all, of the music in this mix is still available for sale, so if you like what you hear and want to hear the full tunes in good quality, I'd say go get 'm! MIX: Never Give Up - a 70s roots selection

Here's a new mix with a rather random 70s vocal roots selection complete with their versions. Most of my mixes so far have been focussing on recent years or the 80s, so it was about time a strictly 70s mix was added to it. There's not a special theme for this one, the only restrictions I gave myself was no repetition of artist or label of the 45 and mainly tunes around the middle part of the decade (not too sure about the exact release dates though), resulting in 13 different vocal-tracks with their b-side version. As always, no full tunes, shorter pieces mixed together. Most of these track come from reissued 45s, so if you like what you hear and want the full tunes in good quality without sound effects, go get 'm! ;-)

MIX: Nicodemus meets Bingy Bunny & The Morwells

Nicodemus aka 'the little short man', one of reggae's finest dancehall deejays! Wicked flow, great voice, nice lyrics and often big riddims! In mainly the early 80s he made a habit out of voicing riddims with original vocal tracks by Bingy Bunny & the Morwells. Bingy Bunny was besides vocalist for the Morwells also the rhythm guitarist for the famous Roots Radics in their golden years. The combination of Nicodemus and Bingy Bunny / Morwells always excited me and so I made a mix of Morwell / Bingy Bunny vocal tracks combined with Nicodemus' toast and in some cases the dub.
