Brotherly Love - An Old School New Style Modern Roots Mix by BMC (2017)

About 4 years after my latest full modern roots mix and with an increasing amount of released modern roots with a traditional touch I decided to go into it again and make this type of releases the focus of a new mix. Love those sounds, that need to be heard, so here it is. 79 minutes, modern roots releases but with a more traditional sound and instrumentation. Sometimes recycled old riddims, sometimes newly played riddims. Clear influences of 60s (rocksteady), 70s (roots, instrumentals, dub) and early 80s (rub-a-dub) Jamaican music. Tunes included date from roughly the last decade, but the majority from the last 5 years. Those claiming to not like contemporary reggae, think again after hearing this! :) Old School New Style!

BMC spinning Tunes - Love Jah More - Modern Takes of Marley Riddims

Can you identify the Marley riddims used here??? :-) After Jam For A While and Strickly Rockers here's a third mix in my 'new' style: spin some tunes and record straight from the line-out of my mixing panel. No fancy riddim-transitions, no effects, just the vibe of the moment: BMC spinning Tunes! Topic for this one became modern takes of Marley riddims, an idea I got after spinning the opening track: Big Youth's We No Want No War. Limitation was simple: vinyl singles only, so there's quite some obvious ones missing which I don't have on vinyl (and some I've used in mixes before). Instead some less obvious ones included and an overall nice vibe throughout. I continued with the trend of starting with a Big Youth tune, always a pleasure. BMC spinning Tunes - Jam For A While - A Modern Roots 45s Session

Now for something completely different. Instead of mixing a set of pre-recorded tunes on the computer, as I did with all my previous mixes, I decided to just spin some tunes and record straight from the line-out of my mixing panel. No fancy riddim-transitions, no cutting parts out of tunes for the nicest flow, no effects, just the vibe of the moment: turntables turning, tunes at hand and see where it goes. I always loved the way I made my mixes, but it is very very time-consuming and, as expressed, didn't feel like worth all the effort anymore. This could be a way in which I might still drop some mixes every now and then, since the time it costs is basically the actual recording time and I can still play some tunes I rate for the interested listeners. Might be less appealing to some, others might in fact enjoy the idea. Whatever it is, this is it for now. I did a trial-run with some modern roots 45s, little over 35 minutes for now and got enough encouragement from the people to go ahead and upload it, so here it is: hear me Jam For A While. If this goes down well, I will over time try to record more in various styles of JA music.

Sweet Jamaica - A 2010 Roots & Culture Mix

With 2011 almost two months on its way, the roots & culture releases from 2010 were still waiting to get the BMC treatment to end up with at least one modern roots mix of the year. Due to various reasons (no bad things!) I rarely have time left lately to start mixing and / or check tunes, so I'm behind my schedule of previous years. Ah so it go, and so it will probably stay, but the music still nice, whether you hear it in 2010 or 2011, right? So, here's a selection of roots & culture tunes from JA and other parts of the world inna JA style (rootsy, mainly JA vocalists, JA tradition). Mix called Sweet Jamaica and includes no less than three tunes with that title from the past year. Spring is in the air, what is reflected in the start of this mix: happy feel good stylee! The mix has a Bunny Lee segment for the old-style lovers too; both Maximum Sound and John John updated 70s Bunny Lee riddims with new vocals from a variety of artists. Check it out. For the vinyl collectors, some of these did see release on vinyl (yes, the format is still alive and kicking!), those that did have a ' * ' behind the title of the riddim. Nuff said, mix in the usual BMC style (no full tunes, added sound effects etc.), get it while you can!

BMC presents Tarrus Riley & Friends - a showcase

Ask me the question what my favourite modern reggae artist at this moment is and I wont need much time to think about an answer: Tarrus Riley. With three albums (Challenges, Parables and Contagious) and numerous singles out he has shown to be an excellent recording artist on both roots and dancehall riddims (ok, gotta admit, I'm don't rate his debut-album Challenges that high). Lyrically great and special in comparison to quite some of his colleagues (whether it's cultural or lovers themes), wicked vocal-lines and flow and great voice. He reminds me a bit of a modern version of the late great Alton Ellis. Big singer. Next to that, he also has an excellent live show, touring the world with the Black Soil band featuring Dean Fraser, one of the better backing bands out there. To show my appreciation for the man's work I made a mix, which soon became a double-episode clocking in close to 80 mins, with my favourite Tarrus tracks, sometimes in combination with one or at most two other tracks on the same riddim to keep the focus on the repertoire of mister Tarrus Riley. Mix is in the usual BMC style; no full tracks, one continuous mix with added soundsamples: promotional style! Slowing It Down - 2009 slow and sweet roots style mix (JA)

Respect all massive and crew! Been some very slow months at BMC's Reggae Mixes. Family-life and work took up most of my time lately, so this last mix with tunes of the previous year took some time to finalize. But here it is, Slowing It Down, which as the title suggests, is a mix of JA productions inna slower, sweet rootsy style, perfect for the nice spring weather we're currently having on this side of the globe. A bit late to still come with a 2K9 mix, but on the other hand 2010 didn't bring that much official releases of modern roots tunes from the island yet (plenty on mp3, but I refer to the old-school vinyl release here). We've seen Don Corleon with the Feminine and Feeling riddims and No Doubt with the Classic riddim plus a few others from US or EU, but we'll save those for a next mix. For now we're officially closing the reggae year 2009 with the following easy going mix with the usual BMC-recipe: one continuous mix of original 45s (!), no full tunes, added sound samples and source-info given so you can go and track down these tunes yourself.
